Yasiin Bey aka Mos Def Narrates Environmental Children’s Story Pacha’s Pajamas

Protecting the environment is not at the top of our minds and is often a forgotten topic in entertainment today but pop culture figures such as rapper Yasiin Bey aka Mos Def are joining the movement to speak up for our precious earth. Lending their voices to Pacha’s Pajamas: A Story Written By Nature, an environmental children’s book, they are reminding everyone of the importance of taking care of the natural world.

Narrating the story of Pacha, Bey hopes to share with pre-teens the interdependent relationship that humans have with the earth and give them small lessons on how they can do their part to preserve that relationship.

As the narrator of the kids environment book, Bey tells fun stories about Pacha exploring the natural world and her interaction with animals. The goal of these stories is to engage children to be curious about their surroundings and join Bey in being part of the team that is protecting nature. The interactive technology makes the experience even more special for kids who can watch the illustrations of Pacha come alive with an app.

One of the other themes in the book is about connectedness and kids can learn about interdependence that we share with the natural world. They are encouraged to step outside and play in the sunshine and connect with animals just like Pacha does in the stories.

“It’s not just the plants and the animals, but also connecting to one another. We’re so dependent on the natural world, the natural world’s also dependent on us,” said Bey. “It’s good to draw that relationship for young people and give that idea that as much as nature is dependent on us, we’re also dependent on nature. If we don’t treat it good, it’s not going to treat us very good either.”

Besides the stories, illustrations and animations on the app, Pacha also has a musical album to spread the positive messages. Bey and other rappers including Talib Kweli are part of the project, supporting the idea of teaching kids to be responsible for their environment and telling everyone that protecting the environment is an important message not to be forgotten.
